Our History in Austin |
 |
| |
The Society’s first appearance in the Diocese of Austin was in 1953 at St. Mary’s Church in Waco. It was formed in response to a tornado, which caused great devastation throughout the city. Many years followed, before the Society would establish deeper roots in Austin. In 1961, five St. Vincent de Paul Conferences were formed in Austin. The first Austin Conference is said to have been at St. Dolores Church.
Since then, the Society's presence in the Diocese of Austin flourished and currently includes three thrift stores, 34 neighborhood-parish Conferences, five District Councils, and a Diocesan Council Board of Directors. In addition to the generous monetary support from parishioners over 870 members support the work of the Society by volunteering their time and expertise which is needed to help the poor in Central Texas. |
